Croatia turn to Slaven Bilic for second spell as national team coach

Croatia have appointed Slaven Bilic as the new head coach of the men’s national team, bringing back a manager who previously held the position between 2006 and 2012. The former international defender succeeds Zlatko Dalic, whose tenure came to an end after Croatia’s elimination by Portugal in the last 32 of the World Cup.

Bilic returns to a role he knows well, taking charge of the national side once again after more than a decade away. His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter as Croatia looks to move forward following their tournament exit.

The change on the bench follows Dalic’s decision to leave the post after almost nine years in charge. His departure came shortly after Croatia’s World Cup campaign concluded with defeat against Portugal.

Bilic outlines his ambitions

Speaking after his appointment, Bilic expressed confidence in the quality of the squad and stressed that his priority is to inspire the team with renewed enthusiasm and determination. He said he believes it is his responsibility to ensure Croatia continues competing among the strongest football nations.

The 57-year-old also explained that he returns with greater experience than during his first spell in charge while retaining the same passion that motivated him in 2006. Bilic added that he is delighted to begin the challenge and hopes to keep the national team ambitious, fearless, and successful.

His comments reflected both optimism and a clear desire to build on Croatia’s established reputation on the international stage.

A successful history with Croatia

Before moving into management, Bilic represented Croatia as a player, earning 44 international appearances. He was also part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup before losing to eventual champions France.

During his previous period as Croatia manager, he oversaw 65 matches. His record included 42 victories, 15 draws, and just eight defeats, making his first tenure one of consistency and strong results.

Those achievements helped establish Bilic as one of the country’s most recognisable coaching figures before he continued his career at the club level.

Experience gained across club football

Since leaving the Croatia job, Bilic has managed several clubs, including spells with West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion, and Watford in England.

His latest coaching role came with Saudi Arabian side Al-Fateh during the 2023-24 season. Now, after gaining experience in domestic football, he returns to the Croatia national team for a second opportunity to lead his country.
