Australia begin World Cup with victory over returning Turkey

Australia opened their World Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 win against Turkey, denying their opponents a successful return to the tournament after a 24-year absence.

The Socceroos, appearing at their sixth consecutive World Cup and seventh overall, produced an efficient performance in their Group D opener. FIFA president Gianni Infantino was among those in attendance as Australia collected three important points.

Turkey arrived at the competition after ending a lengthy World Cup drought. The nation had not appeared at the finals since reaching the semifinals in 2002 and secured qualification this year by defeating Kosovo in a playoff.

However, their comeback to football’s biggest stage ended in disappointment as Australia controlled key moments of the match and capitalized on their opportunities.

Irankunda breaks the deadlock

The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute through Nestory Irankunda. The young forward drove forward despite pressure from three defenders before sending a low effort into the net shortly after the first-half cooling break.

Following his goal, Irankunda celebrated by striking the corner flag, a gesture inspired by Australian football icon Tim Cahill.

The strike added another milestone to the 20-year-old’s career. The Watford player became the youngest footballer ever to score for Australia at a World Cup.

Turkey attempted to respond and nearly found an equaliser when Abdulkerim Bardakcı unleashed a powerful effort from distance, but goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced an important save to preserve his side’s advantage.

Beach shines while Turkey search for answers

One of the major talking points before kickoff was Australia’s decision to start Patrick Beach in goal ahead of the more experienced Matthew Ryan.

The choice proved successful as Beach delivered an impressive display, finishing the match with eight saves. His performance frustrated Turkey throughout the evening and helped maintain Australia’s lead during key moments.

Turkey introduced Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz at halftime in an effort to change the course of the game. Later, Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler threatened from a dangerous free-kick in the 57th minute, but Beach was again equal to the task.

The Australian goalkeeper’s consistency ensured the Turks were unable to find a route back into the contest despite creating several promising situations.

Metcalfe seals the result

Australia secured victory in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe doubled the advantage. The midfielder took full advantage of a turnover by Ismail Yüksek and converted to put the outcome beyond doubt.

The result continues Australia’s positive recent history at the World Cup. During the previous tournament in Qatar, the Socceroos recovered from an opening defeat to France by beating Tunisia and Denmark before eventually being eliminated by Argentina in the round of 16.

For Turkey, this marked only the third World Cup appearance in the nation’s history and the first since 2002. Their earlier participation came in 1954.

The two sides compete in Group D alongside the United States and Paraguay. The Americans had already made a strong start by defeating Paraguay 4-1 in Los Angeles a day earlier, adding further significance to Australia’s opening victory.
