Canada earn historic point in World Cup opener against Bosnia

Canada began their home World Cup campaign by sharing the points with Bosnia and Herzegovina in an entertaining Group B encounter. The co-hosts appeared to be heading for defeat before substitute Cyle Larin delivered a crucial equaliser late in the contest.

The Southampton forward had barely settled into the match when he produced the decisive moment. Just over two minutes after entering the field, Larin turned away from Tarik Muharemovic and struck a low effort beyond Nikola Vasilj. A slight touch on the way through helped the ball find the net and level the score.

The goal carried added significance for the hosts. It ensured Canada avoided defeat at the World Cup for the first time after losing all three matches during their debut appearance in 1986 and repeating that record in 2022.

Bosnia strike first in Toronto

Bosnia and Herzegovina arrived at the tournament after securing qualification through playoff victories over Wales and Italy, both achieved via penalty shootouts. The visitors carried that confidence into the match and moved ahead midway through the first half.

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute from a corner delivered by Ivan Basic. Former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac redirected the ball into a dangerous area, where Jovo Lukic rose to head home and register his first international goal.

Holding a narrow advantage, Bosnia attempted to protect their lead while Canada searched for a way back into the game. The visitors remained a threat throughout a match that continued to produce opportunities at both ends.

Hosts finally find a way through

Canada came close to restoring parity shortly after the interval. Richie Laryea’s effort appeared destined for the net before Kolasinac produced an outstanding defensive intervention, diverting the ball onto the crossbar and away from danger.

The home side continued to press and created another excellent chance through Tani Oluwaseyi. However, Nikola Katic was positioned perfectly to clear the striker’s header off the line and preserve Bosnia’s lead.

Despite those missed opportunities, Jesse Marsch’s team maintained its attacking approach. Their persistence was eventually rewarded in the 78th minute when Larin’s strike completed the comeback and secured Canada’s first-ever World Cup draw.

Encouraging signs for the co-hosts

As one of the tournament’s three host nations alongside Mexico and the United States, Canada had hoped to begin with a victory similar to Mexico’s 2-0 success over South Africa in the opening match of the competition.

A packed Toronto stadium provided a vibrant backdrop, with home supporters largely dressed in red and visiting fans wearing blue. Before kick-off, singer Alanis Morissette performed the Canadian national anthem, helping create a memorable atmosphere.

The match itself was played at a high tempo and featured chances for both teams. Jonathan David, Tani Oluwaseyi, and Stephen Eustaquio all had opportunities for Canada before the equaliser finally arrived.

Marsch’s attacking changes ultimately made the difference, with Larin scoring only 121 seconds after being introduced. With upcoming fixtures against Qatar on 18 June and Switzerland on 24 June, Canada remains firmly in contention to challenge for progression from what appears to be a tightly contested group.
