Manchester United have agreed a deal worth £35 million with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson, with the transfer expected to be the first addition of Michael Carrick’s tenure at Old Trafford. The agreement also contains up to £4 million in performance-related bonuses.
The Brazilian is now preparing to complete a move to Manchester, where he is expected to sign a contract running for four years. With only one season remaining on his Atalanta deal, the Italian club faced the prospect of losing him for nothing next year, helping United secure a lower transfer fee.
United continue plans for midfield rebuild
The arrival of Ederson represents the opening stage of a broader reshaping of Manchester United’s midfield options. Carrick is reportedly aiming to strengthen the centre of the pitch with at least two new recruits before the squad begins the next campaign.
Among the other names being considered is Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is another player admired by the club, although a move to Manchester City currently appears more likely for the midfielder.
United have also monitored alternative options. Carlos Baleba attracted interest from the club previously, but the Brighton player endured a challenging campaign. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton remains another footballer under consideration as the search for reinforcements continues.
Departures create room for new arrivals
Changes in midfield have become a priority following several developments involving existing squad members. Casemiro is set to leave Manchester United after four years at the club, departing as a free agent.
There is also uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s future. Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen’s exit in 2025 left a gap in the squad that was never filled, increasing the need for fresh additions in central areas.
Ederson’s record in Italy and with Brazil
Ederson moved to Atalanta in 2022 and went on to become an important figure for the Serie A side. During his time in Bergamo, he scored 16 goals in 180 appearances across all competitions.
The midfielder was also part of the squad that lifted the Europa League trophy in 2024. On the international stage, he has earned three appearances for Brazil, further enhancing his reputation ahead of a potential switch to the Premier League.
