Highlanders, Chiefs share points In derby clash

Highlanders and Bulawayo Chiefs played out a 1-1 draw at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday in the opening game of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, with Bosso scoring late to deny the visitors maximum points in the Bulawayo derby.

Bulawayo Chiefs took the lead in the first half through Zibusiso Dambo, who found space inside the box and calmly finished in the 27th minute to silence the home crowd.

Highlanders pushed for an equaliser for much of the match but were repeatedly denied by Chiefs goalkeeper Matripples Muleya, who made several important saves to keep the Ninjas ahead going into the break.

Chiefs remained organised defensively, with captain Malvin Mkolo leading the backline well as Highlanders increased the pressure in the second half.

The hosts eventually found a breakthrough late in the match when Nigerian striker Benjamin Adeogun scored in the closing minutes to level the score and rescue a point for Highlanders.

The match also marked Benjani Mwaruwari’s first league game in charge of Highlanders since his appointment earlier this year.

Both sides had late chances to win the game, but neither could find a winner as the Bulawayo derby ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
