Bayern goalkeeper confirms end of international career

Manuel Neuer has made it clear he has no desire to rejoin the German national team. The 39-year-old goalkeeper dismissed recent speculation following Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match last night, reiterating that his international career is firmly behind him.

Earlier in the week, rumors circulated after comments from his agent, reported by the Frankfurter Rundschau, suggested that Neuer would “not say no” if Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann reached out. However, the veteran shot-stopper insists his stance has not changed.

Former Captain Stands by His Decision

Speaking at a Bayern media event three days ago, Neuer said stepping away from international duty was a deliberate and considered choice. “It was a conscious decision for me to step down from the German national team,” he explained. “That’s not something that’s an option for me. I’m concentrating on my club.”

He reflected on his long spell with the national side, which began in 2009, and described the 2024 European Championship as a fitting conclusion to his international journey — even though Germany’s campaign ended in a defeat to Spain on home soil.

Looking Back, Not Forward

Neuer expressed pride in his contributions and gratitude for what he gained during his years with the national team. “I think I gained a lot from German football and hopefully gave enough back,” he said. “I had a very successful and nice time. I’m not thinking about returning at all. I can’t visualize Manuel Neuer returning to the German national team.”

In a post-match interview with Sky Germany, he underlined that he has not discussed any comeback with his agent. “The fact remains that I have decided not to return to the German national team. That is my final decision,” he stated.
