England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold featured in his first La Liga fixture as Real Madrid edged past Osasuna.
The full-back, signed from Liverpool during the summer, had already appeared five times at the FIFA Club World Cup, where the team reached the last four under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
At the Santiago Bernabeu, he was taken off in the second half and warmly applauded by the home crowd, with Dani Carvajal coming on in the 68th minute.
Mbappe secures narrow victory
Kylian Mbappe netted the decisive strike from the spot to seal Madrid’s win in their first league outing of the campaign.
The French striker converted calmly, sending Sergio Herrera the wrong way after earning the foul inside the area.
Madrid, runners-up last season with Carlo Ancelotti, controlled much of the contest and produced several efforts that tested the visiting goalkeeper.
New signings and debutants on show
Young centre-back Dean Huijsen, who arrived from Bournemouth, fired from a distance along with Eder Militao, both of them forced saves from Herrera.
Other fresh arrivals also featured, including Alvaro Carreras, the £43m signing from Benfica, and 18-year-old Franco Mastantuono, a £38.5m capture from River Plate.
Osasuna finished the encounter with ten men after Abel Bretones was dismissed in added time for a foul on Gonzalo García.
