Lucas Vázquez says farewell to Real Madrid after 402 appearances

Lucas Vázquez has officially announced his departure from Real Madrid, bringing an end to a long journey that began when he joined the club’s academy at the age of 16. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the winger reflected on his nearly 20-year connection with the Spanish giants.

“Dear Real Madrid fans, it’s been almost two decades since I arrived at Valdebebas, at 16 years old, full of dreams and the desire to wear this shirt,” Vázquez wrote. “Every step was a gift, and over time, Real Madrid became my home.”

The 33-year-old expressed his appreciation to everyone at the club, including the president, board, staff, coaches, teammates, and especially the supporters. “You always pushed me to give a little more,” he said, highlighting the bond with fans that sustained him throughout his time in Madrid.

After taking part in over 400 matches and collecting 23 trophies, Vázquez said he is leaving the club with peace of mind. “I leave certain that I gave it my all,” he noted, adding, “Wherever I go, I will proudly say that I had the honor of playing for the best team in the world. Hala Madrid and nothing else!”

End of an era in Madrid

Though his exit had been expected this summer, it was only now that a formal confirmation arrived. Vázquez’s contract expired at the end of June, but he signed a short-term deal to participate in Real Madrid’s tour of the United States.

The club paid tribute to him with high praise, calling the Galician wide man “one of our club’s greatest legends.” Aside from a single season on loan at Espanyol, he spent his entire professional career in the Spanish capital.

He leaves the club with 402 total appearances, tying him for 25th place in Real Madrid’s all-time appearance rankings.

Next step remains unclear

While his destination has not yet been finalized, speculation continues. A return to Espanyol has been rumored, though reports suggest he has ruled out joining another Spanish top-flight team out of respect for Real Madrid.

Options abroad have surfaced, with Major League Soccer and Qatari side Al Gharafa emerging as possibilities. The latter club could offer Vázquez a chance to reunite with former teammate Joselu.
