Newcastle close to big-money move for Elanga

Newcastle United have increased their pursuit of Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, tabling a significant bid worth £55 million (€64m/$75m) for the winger. The Magpies’ renewed push follows growing interest from Aston Villa, who have also entered the race for the 23-year-old Sweden international. With multiple clubs circling, the battle for Elanga’s signature is shaping up to be one of the summer’s most closely watched transfer developments.

Elanga was ever-present during Forest’s 2024–25 Premier League campaign, featuring in all 38 matches. He delivered six goals and provided 11 assists over the season, playing a vital part in the club’s rise to a seventh-place league finish—their highest in decades. That achievement secured them a spot in the UEFA Conference League for the first time in 30 years, underlining the winger’s influence on the squad.

Forest’s stance and deal structure

Although Nottingham Forest are not actively pushing for a transfer, club sources suggest they may be open to a deal if the final package exceeds £60 million ($82m), including any performance-related add-ons. While an upfront payment of £55 million is seen as acceptable, Forest are holding firm that the total value of the agreement must go beyond their stated valuation before allowing the move to proceed.

Newcastle had previously made an offer during the last summer transfer window, reportedly valued at £45 million ($61.45m). That earlier proposal included an initial cash payment of £30 million, the inclusion of Miguel Almiron—rated at £5 million ($7m)—and two conditional add-ons of £5 million each. Nottingham Forest rejected the bid, and Newcastle have now responded with an improved offer as reported by the Daily Mail, citing information from Fabrizio Romano.

Transfer implications and market pressure

Aston Villa’s late entry into negotiations adds pressure to Newcastle’s bid, increasing the risk of missing out on another key target. Newcastle have already seen a potential transfer for Brighton forward Joao Pedro collapse, with Chelsea swooping in to finalize that deal instead. In addition, their interest in Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo has reportedly cooled, with Manchester United now leading the pursuit for the 25-year-old.

One more factor influencing the potential deal is the sell-on clause negotiated by Manchester United when Elanga moved to Nottingham Forest. If the transfer goes through, the Old Trafford club stands to receive 20 percent of the final fee.

As the transfer window progresses and interest intensifies, the coming days are likely to play a crucial role in determining where Anthony Elanga will continue his Premier League career.
