Bellingham to undergo long-awaited shoulder surgery

After nearly two years of managing a persistent shoulder injury, Jude Bellingham has decided to undergo surgery following the FIFA Club World Cup. The Real Madrid midfielder dislocated his shoulder in November 2023 during his debut season in Spain but delayed the operation to remain available for both club and country.

Despite the injury, the 21-year-old played a central role in Real Madrid’s dominant 2023–24 campaign. Bellingham featured heavily as the club captured La Liga, the Champions League, and the Spanish Super Cup. He also represented England at Euro 2024, helping the team reach the final. His return to Madrid saw him continue playing in Carlo Ancelotti’s final year in charge.

Throughout this period, Bellingham wore a shoulder brace and endured discomfort while continuing to deliver top performances. His persistence and consistency became a defining part of his rise, even as the injury lingered.

Decision follows years of pain and patience

Speaking to Managing Madrid after Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Pachuca in the Club World Cup, Bellingham explained that he’s finally ready for the procedure. “I’ve reached the point where the pain isn’t so bad, but I was sick of playing with the sling,” he admitted.

The midfielder revealed the toll it’s taken on his body, including excessive sweating and weight loss. “I’ve decided that I’ll have surgery after the tournament,” he confirmed. “I’ve been waiting for a long time, and my patience is running out, but the physios and doctors have been incredible.”

His operation is expected to sideline him for approximately three months, meaning he’ll likely miss the beginning of Real Madrid’s 2025–26 campaign. The timing is especially significant as the club enters a new era under incoming manager Xabi Alonso.

Crucial absence for Los Blancos

Bellingham has emerged as Real Madrid’s most influential attacking midfielder, producing 38 goals and 27 assists across just two seasons. What makes the achievement more remarkable is that most of those contributions came while he was dealing with the injury.

His presence on the pitch has often made the difference, especially in crucial moments. With the start of Alonso’s tenure approaching, the absence of such a key figure will be a challenge for the new coach.

Still, for Bellingham, the priority is clear. “I just want to feel free,” he said.
