Foden impresses as Manchester City start Club World Cup with win

Manchester City began their FIFA Club World Cup journey with a 2-0 victory over Wydad AC in Philadelphia, and it was Phil Foden who stood out with a goal and assist. The 25-year-old, who has come through City’s academy, gave his side an early lead by scoring in the second minute before setting up Jeremy Doku for the second.

After a season affected by injury and inconsistent form, Foden looked sharp at Lincoln Financial Field. He was at the center of much of City’s attacking play and took up a central role in Pep Guardiola’s system. Speaking to Channel 5 after the match, Foden said: “A new season, fresh me,” adding that the competition was key for players to regain match sharpness.

The England international, who netted just seven Premier League goals last season, appears to be rediscovering his rhythm. His composed finish for the opener and involvement in the buildup to the second highlighted his growing influence in the squad.

City ended the match with ten men following Rico Lewis’ red card in the final minutes, but Guardiola praised Foden’s overall contribution and described his performance as “really good.”

New signings make steady start in demanding conditions

Alongside the experienced figures in City’s lineup, two debutants made their first appearances following big-money moves. Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki both featured from the start, with full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri remaining on the bench.

Reijnders, a Dutch midfielder, made an immediate impression. Operating as a dynamic presence in the center of the pitch, he broke up play effectively and showed an ability to progress the ball. Guardiola highlighted the midfielder’s athleticism and feel for the game, suggesting he could play a major role this season.

Cherki, who joined from Lyon, showed glimpses of his flair with some quick footwork and clever passes. While less involved than Reijnders in dictating play, the Frenchman’s creativity in tight areas provided a glimpse of what he might offer in the final third.

Guardiola acknowledged that replacing Kevin De Bruyne, who joined Napoli on a free transfer, would not be easy. However, he expressed confidence in the quality brought in over the summer and was optimistic about how the new players would adapt.

Foden finds space in De Bruyne’s absence

With De Bruyne no longer at the club, Foden appears to be stepping into a more prominent creative role. After revealing earlier this year that he had been managing an ankle problem and struggling mentally, the England international now looks rejuvenated.

His performance against the Moroccan side showed confidence and composure, and his movement outside the area allowed him to link up play and influence tempo. Foden’s goal – the quickest in the competition so far – was the product of intelligent positioning and calm execution.

He became the first English player to score in multiple editions of the tournament, underlining his growing impact on the international stage. Replaced after 60 minutes by Rodri, Foden had 54 touches during his time on the pitch, reflecting his involvement in City’s approach.

Looking ahead, Guardiola and City may look to Foden to lead the team creatively as they adjust to life without their long-time midfield talisman.
