Kevin De Bruyne has officially signed for Napoli, marking the end of a ten-year spell at Manchester City. The 33-year-old midfielder made the move after his contract with City expired at the conclusion of the Premier League campaign.
He arrives in Italy to play under head coach Antonio Conte, who previously managed Chelsea and Tottenham. Napoli, Serie A champions, announced the signing by sharing a computer-generated image showing De Bruyne seated on a throne with a crown, accompanied by the caption “King Kev is here.”
The Belgian international opted to continue his career in Europe, turning down an offer from Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire. With this move, he is set to compete in next season’s Champions League.
Farewell to a decorated City career
De Bruyne leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Manchester. Since arriving from Wolfsburg in 2015, he has lifted 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles. His honors also include five League Cups, two FA Cups, and the club’s first-ever Champions League title, secured in 2023.
That same year, Manchester City completed a historic treble, becoming only the second English club to do so. De Bruyne played a key role in that achievement, cementing his status as one of the club’s most influential players.
His departure was confirmed before the final matches of the season. In his last appearance at the Etihad Stadium, De Bruyne was honored by supporters during City’s home win over Bournemouth. He later made a short appearance in the team’s away match at Fulham.
Reflecting on his time in Manchester, De Bruyne said: “It’s been an unbelievable ride and an absolute pleasure. I’m super proud to have played a part in the success we enjoyed. Manchester has been my home and my family’s home for these past 10 years.”
City reshape midfield following departure
In response to De Bruyne’s exit, Manchester City moved swiftly in the transfer market. They brought in Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan and Rayan Cherki from Lyon, both expected to strengthen the midfield options under Pep Guardiola.
De Bruyne could potentially face his former club next season in the Champions League, as Napoli prepares to defend their domestic crown and make another push in Europe.
He will link up with Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour, fellow midfielders with Premier League experience, in a Napoli squad that narrowly won a tense Serie A title race last term.
