Pochettino open to Tottenham return in the future

Mauricio Pochettino has reiterated his desire to return to Tottenham Hotspur at some point in his career. The Argentine, who managed the north London side from 2014 to 2019, guided them to significant milestones, including a Premier League runners-up finish in 2016, an EFL Cup final appearance in 2015, and a place in the Champions League final in 2019.

Despite being dismissed in November 2019, Pochettino remains fond of the club and has not ruled out the possibility of managing Spurs again. Speaking to Sky Sports, he reflected on his past remarks about wanting to return and confirmed that his feelings have not changed over time.

“I remember saying that I hoped to come back one day, and after five or six years, I still feel the same way,” he said. While currently focused on his role as head coach of the United States national team, he maintained that a future return to Tottenham remains in his thoughts.

Good terms with Levy despite departure

Pochettino emphasized that his departure from Spurs did not damage his relationship with club chairman Daniel Levy. Having worked together for nearly six years, he acknowledged the emotional highs and lows they experienced but stressed that their professional split was amicable.

“We went through a lot together, and of course, it was difficult at times, but we ended things on good terms,” he stated. “From a professional standpoint, we parted ways, but on a personal level, we still have a very strong connection.”

Chelsea exit and USA opportunity

Following his time at Tottenham, Pochettino took charge at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Chelsea, where he spent a single season. He led the Blues to an EFL Cup final, an FA Cup semi-final, and a sixth-place Premier League finish before leaving by mutual agreement in May.

Reflecting on his departure from Stamford Bridge, he acknowledged that the decision to part ways was beneficial for both parties. “Sometimes when things don’t align, it’s better to step away and explore new possibilities,” he explained. “In the end, it was the best outcome for everyone.”

After leaving Chelsea, Pochettino was linked to the England national team job, but ultimately, the role went to Thomas Tuchel. While he admitted that coaching England would be an honor, the opportunity did not materialize at the right time. Instead, he embraced the chance to lead the United States ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which the country is co-hosting.

“The timing wasn’t right for England, but managing the USA national team with a World Cup on the horizon was an incredible opportunity,” he said. “When the offer came, it was an easy decision to accept.”
