Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes his team must deliver their strongest performance of the season to overcome Paris St-Germain and advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.
Despite being second-best for much of their last-16 first-leg clash in Paris, Liverpool secured a crucial 1-0 victory thanks to Harvey Elliott’s late goal. While it was a significant result, Slot understands that an improved display will be necessary at Anfield on Tuesday.
When asked if Liverpool would need to reach a new level, Slot was clear in his response. “Yes, I do think so,” he stated.
PSG a formidable challenge
Slot acknowledged that PSG pose the toughest challenge his side has encountered this season. “This is the most complete team we have faced so far,” he said.
Although Liverpool have already gone up against top English sides like Arsenal and Manchester City, Slot emphasized the unique threat posed by PSG. He highlighted the French club’s intensity, financial resources, and high-quality squad, as well as the tactical expertise of their manager.
Liverpool’s record at Anfield has been strong this season, with only one defeat – a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in September. Slot is determined to maintain that home form against the Ligue 1 champions.
Attacking mindset at Anfield
Despite holding a slender lead, Liverpool will not approach the second leg with a defensive mindset. “We try to play every game to win,” Slot insisted.
Reflecting on the first leg, he admitted that his team did not intend to sit deep for long periods but expects a different type of match at Anfield. “The intention is always the same – we are not going for a draw,” he added.
In a boost to Liverpool’s attacking options, forward Cody Gakpo is available for selection after recovering from injury. His return could provide the Reds with an extra attacking threat as they aim to secure their place in the next round.
