Juventus claimed a narrow advantage over PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League knockout play-off after a dramatic late winner from Samuel Mbangula.
The Italian side, who finished 20th in the group phase standings, started strongly, creating several early opportunities. Nicolas Gonzalez, Kenan Yildiz, and Randal Kolo Muani – on loan from Paris Saint-Germain – all tested PSV’s defense but were unable to break the deadlock.
It was Weston McKennie who eventually put Juventus ahead in the 34th minute. The American midfielder capitalized on a defensive lapse from PSV, sending a spectacular strike into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Perisic’s equalizer gives PSV hope
Juventus maintained control for large spells, and Mbangula nearly made an instant impact after coming on for Yildiz at halftime, only to see his effort cleared off the line by Ryan Flamingo.
Despite struggling to generate consistent attacking momentum, PSV found a breakthrough with just their second shot on target. Ivan Perisic struck a precise finish into the bottom corner to bring his team level.
His first Champions League goal in four years was upheld after a lengthy VAR check, which reviewed claims that Noah Lang had handled the ball during the build-up.
Late drama as Juventus secure first-leg victory
With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Mbangula emerged as the hero in the closing moments. The forward reacted quickest inside the box, steering the ball home from close range to restore Juventus’ lead.
This victory marks Juventus’ second triumph over PSV in this season’s competition, having previously won 3-1 in the group stage. The two sides will meet again at Philips Stadion for the decisive second leg on February 19.
