Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié has signed a fresh long-term agreement, extending his stay with the Bundesliga champions until 2029. The announcement came shortly before Leverkusen concluded their stellar 2024 campaign with an emphatic 5-1 victory over SC Freiburg.
“This is more than just putting pen to paper,” Hincapié shared. “After three-and-a-half years, this club feels like home. Bayer Leverkusen, the fans, and my teammates have made this journey extraordinary. Last season showed what’s achievable with unity and determination. I’m grateful to continue contributing to the club’s bright future.”
Key Figure in a Historic Season
Since arriving from CA Talleres in 2021 for €6.35 million, Hincapié has become a cornerstone of Leverkusen’s defense. The 22-year-old Ecuadorian has made 141 appearances in all competitions, 98 of which came under manager Xabi Alonso. His versatility across multiple defensive roles was pivotal in the club’s unbeaten domestic campaign, culminating in their first-ever Bundesliga title and a German Cup win.
Hincapié also played a vital role in Leverkusen’s journey to the 2023/24 Europa League final. Despite their unbeaten run through the tournament, they fell short against Atalanta in the final. His ability to adapt as a left-sided defender, central back, or wing-back has caught the attention of Europe’s elite clubs, underscoring his growing reputation.
Praise from Club Leadership
Sporting director Simon Rolfes commended Hincapié’s progress, highlighting his rise to prominence on the global stage. “Piero is now competing on the same level as world-class talents like Lionel Messi and Mo Salah. He has earned worldwide respect, and we are delighted he has committed his future to Bayer 04,” Rolfes said.
By securing one of Europe’s most promising defenders, Bayer Leverkusen’s recruitment team has delivered another masterstroke, ensuring their ambitions remain firmly on track.
