Investigation into suspected incident in Stockholm closed

A Swedish prosecutor has announced the closure of an investigation launched last October concerning a suspected rape case during a visit by Kylian Mbappé to Stockholm. The case was dropped on Thursday due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

The Real Madrid striker and captain of the French national team had traveled to Sweden during the October international break while recovering from a thigh injury. Reports from local Swedish media suggested Mbappé was implicated in the investigation. However, his representatives denied any misconduct and stated they were unaware of any ongoing inquiry.

Prosecutor’s statement avoids direct reference

In the official press release, senior Swedish prosecutor Marina Chirakova did not explicitly name Mbappé or confirm any direct involvement. “During the investigation, there has been a designated person reasonably suspected of rape and two cases of sexual harassment,” Chirakova stated. “However, my assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed further, and the investigation is therefore closed.”

The statement indicates that while a suspect was identified during the inquiry, the lack of credible or conclusive evidence prevented further legal action.

Media reports and denials

The Swedish media’s claims that Mbappé was the focus of the investigation sparked significant public attention. Nonetheless, no formal accusations or charges were filed against the footballer. His team maintained that he had no knowledge of the matter, and the prosecutor’s decision to close the case appears to confirm the absence of substantial evidence.

This announcement effectively ends a year-long investigation that had attracted widespread speculation but yielded no actionable findings.
