Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé found himself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons after his team’s Champions League defeat to Liverpool, but teammate Luka Modrić has stepped forward to show his support.
A tough night at Anfield
Real Madrid’s return to Champions League action ended in disappointment as they fell 2-0 to Liverpool at Anfield. Goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo secured the win for the home side, leaving Carlo Ancelotti’s team empty-handed.
The visitors struggled to find rhythm on the night, with several key players underperforming. Among those was Kylian Mbappé, who occupied his preferred left-wing position in the absence of Vinícius Jr. However, the French forward failed to make an impact, with his influence in the attacking third largely stifled.
Adding to his woes, Mbappé missed a crucial second-half penalty that could have leveled the score at a decisive moment. This miss further fueled criticism of his performance.
Modrić backs his teammate
In the wake of the defeat, the spotlight quickly turned to Mbappé, with scrutiny over his form intensifying. Yet, Luka Modrić, speaking to the media after the match, was quick to defend the 25-year-old.
The veteran midfielder emphasized Mbappé’s hard work and positive attitude in training, expressing confidence in his teammate’s abilities.
“We see Mbappé doing well, training well, with confidence,” Modrić stated. “I’m sure that Kylian will do what is expected of him.”
Modrić’s backing may offer some solace to Mbappé as the French international seeks to regain form and prove his worth at the Bernabéu following a challenging outing.
