Nagelsmann Prepares for Germany’s Future After EURO 2024 Exit

Following Germany’s defeat to Spain in EURO 2024, head coach Julian Nagelsmann is already planning for the future. One of the key issues is finding a replacement for Toni Kroos, who retired from football after the loss. Despite Kroos’ retirement, Nagelsmann plans to stick with the same playing style. He sees potential in players like Angelo Stiller of VfB Stuttgart, Pascal Groß of Brighton, and Aleksandar Pavlovic from Bayern Munich. This indicates that Leon Goretzka is unlikely to return to the national team as long as Nagelsmann is in charge.

Nagelsmann’s approach to the midfield transition shows his commitment to nurturing new talent while maintaining the team’s identity. By focusing on players like Stiller, Groß, and Pavlovic, he aims to create a seamless integration of fresh faces into the squad. This strategy not only addresses the immediate need for a Kroos replacement but also sets the stage for a long-term vision for the midfield.

Defensive and Offensive Changes

Joshua Kimmich is likely to remain at right-back after delivering several strong performances during the tournament. His stability and reliability in defense have been crucial, and Nagelsmann values his contribution in that role. Kimmich’s ability to balance defensive duties with offensive support makes him an integral part of the team’s strategy moving forward.

The future of Manuel Neuer is uncertain, but the DFB believes he will continue as the goalkeeper. This would affect Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was expected to step up as the number one choice. Neuer’s experience and leadership are highly regarded, and his continuation would mean ter Stegen has to wait longer for his chance to be the primary goalkeeper.

In the attacking department, Kai Havertz will continue as the striker. Although he didn’t score as many goals as Niclas Füllkrug, Nagelsmann was impressed with Havertz’s performance as Germany’s number nine during EURO 2024. Havertz’s ability to play in various attacking positions and his overall contribution to the team’s play have convinced Nagelsmann to keep him in the leading striker role. This decision reflects Nagelsmann’s belief in Havertz’s potential to grow and adapt in this crucial position.
