Gary Lineker has put forth rumours of Jürgen Klopp’s next role now that he is free of his responsibilities towards Liverpool.
The 56-year-old joined the Reds as a 47-year-old in 2015 after leaving Borussia Dortmund and now, he could be on his way back to the German club.
Klopp, who shared an emotional farewell at Anfield after winning 2 – 0 in the last Premier League game of the 2023/24 season, has previously stated that he would most likely be taking a year-long break from coaching. Klopp even claimed that Liverpool may be his last coaching gig.
“I don’t know exactly why nobody believes I probably will not be a manager again,” Klopp said in his post-match news conference at Anfield. “But I understand because obviously it seems to be a drug – it looks like that because everybody comes back and everyone works until they are 70-something.”
“I always had the idea that I will not do that that long. Look, other people are smarter, other people can do it in different ways. I have to be all-in, I have to be the spark, I have to be the energy, I have to be all these kind of things and I’m empty. That’s it.”
“My biggest worry today was that [goalkeeper coach] John Achterberg was coughing all the time next to me and I thought I would wake up and I’m ill because he did his coughing in my direction!”
This statement makes Lineker’s claims of Klopp coming out of his rest period to take over as Borussia Dortmund’s president look legitimate. The former Leciester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona striker said this during a podcast session on The Rest Is Football Podcast.
“I will be interested to see what Jurgen Klopp does next. I think he will definitely take some time out because I think he’s genuine when he says he has run out of energy. You can see why that job is so demanding,” Lineker began.
“There will be a battle for him in a year’s time. Or they’ll be lining up for a year or so’s time. I heard a little rumour that he might end up being president of Borussia Dortmund, which would be amazing.”
Dortmund fans still appreciate Klopp for his time at the club. He led them to a UEFA Champions League final and was the last club to break Bayern Munich’s hold over the German Bundesliga before Bayer 04 Leverkusen did it this season.
Returning there would be serious business for Die Schwarzengelben who are trying to grab a hold of the trophy after almost 15 years without winning it.
