Just before the second leg of their semifinal clash against Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic chose to remain coy about Jadon Sancho’s future at the Westfalenstadion.
“We don’t know how long the story will continue. This is part of the deal, that he is not our player from July 1, but until then we are going to make this time that we have as special as possible,” Terzic said to journalists in the pre-match press conference ahead of their clash at Parc de Princes.
The question came as a result of the Englishman’s stellar performances in the Black and Yellow of Dortmund, especially the one he put in against PSG in the first leg of their semifinal clash.
Sancho has only gone and done it again, playing a key role and blending well with the team as they held off PSG’s attacks to win the ticket to Wembley where they will face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the 2023/24 final.
Veteran defender Mats Hummels scored the only goal of the game to send Dortmund to the final with a 2 – 0 aggregate scoreline. Sancho played a more defensive role in this outing, doubling up with Julian Ryerson down Dortmund’s right to stop Kylian Mbappe.
The game ended 1 – 0 in favour of the away side and 2 – 0 on aggregate and Sancho’s celebrations could be heard all the way in Old Trafford. Speaking after the game, Terzic echoed the club’s chief executive, Hans-Joachim Watzke who had earlier mentioned that the club will do all they can to keep Sancho.
It is now clear that Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund will go into negotiations for the player. The price of the deal, however, is what could throw the German Bundesliga club off.
Meanwhile, Watzke has praised Terzic, the fan-turned-coach for taking his boyhood club to a first Champions League final in over a decade.
“When you play in a competition, the final is always the goal. I’m happy for him,” Watzke told Amazon Prime. “It’s unbelievable what Edin is doing. Last year we were just about to win the championship. Now we’re at Wembley in the Champions League final. What more do you want in two and a half years?”
“We always knew what we had in each other. Edin is someone who works meticulously and extremely hard – for his club. In the end, you get rewarded, that’s how I feel. As a coach, it’s a bit more difficult to get to the final with BVB than with Paris. That’s completely clear. But he did it. It’s great for him.”
