Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips admits it was difficult to hear Pep Guardiola’s comments

In a recent interview, Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips opened up about the challenges he faced after his manager, Pep Guardiola, called him “overweight” in the media last season. Guardiola had dropped Phillips for a Carabao Cup match against Liverpool in December 2022, citing his lack of fitness as the reason.

Responding to Guardiola’s comments, Phillips admitted that it was difficult for him to hear such remarks, especially considering the attention it received. He clarified that he did not consider himself to be overweight, but acknowledged that Guardiola had a different perspective. Phillips stated that he took the criticism as motivation and worked hard to improve his fitness.

Phillips struggles and lack of game-time at City

Despite his efforts, Phillips only started four games for Manchester City throughout the entire 2022/23 season, despite joining the club from Leeds United for a hefty £45m fee. The midfielder revealed that the situation was a misunderstanding between him and some staff members, which will be explored in-depth in an upcoming documentary called “Kalvin Phillips: The Road to City,” set to air on Amazon Prime on July 19.

Since struggling to secure a regular spot in the Manchester City lineup, there have been rumors suggesting that Phillips might seek more playing time elsewhere in the upcoming 2023/24 season. West Ham United has been linked as a potential destination for the 27-year-old, especially after losing Declan Rice. However, Phillips expressed his determination to become a more valuable member of Guardiola’s squad.

Reflecting on his time at Leeds United, where he played regularly, Phillips acknowledged the change in his role at Manchester City. He no longer expects to be a guaranteed starter but remains committed to pushing himself and contributing more to the team. He hopes that the upcoming season will be better for him in terms of playing time and winning games.

As Manchester City prepare for the new season, there is also speculation about potential transfer moves. Jude Bellingham reportedly turned down an offer from the club, inspired by Erling Haaland’s career path, while Alphonso Davies has been mentioned as a possible arrival. Additionally, Bernardo Silva is reportedly a target for Saudi Arabia. Manchester City are also interested in breaking their transfer record to sign Josko Gvardiol for their defense after acquiring Mateo Kovacic earlier this summer.

It remains to be seen if Phillips might still be tempted to consider an exit from the club or remain determined to push for a spot under Pep Guardiola.
