Kylian Mbappe equalled the record of fastest goal as he scored after eight seconds in PSG’s 7-1 thrashing of Lille on Sunday.
The 2022/23 Ligue 1 season has started with firm favourites Paris Saint-Germain already speeding off and leaving the rest of the pack in its wake. They recorded another high-scoring win over Lille on Sunday to cement their position at the top of the table.
The French Ligue is perhaps the most one-sided league in Europe, with PSG the dominant force in the French top flight.
The Paris club have a stranglehold on the league. They have won the title every season for the past ten years, except on two occasions. The boat load of money from Qatar gives them an overwhelming edge over the other clubs, who are unable to compete with that financial might.
The new season has seen PSG start on a bright note, decimating every team before them without mercy. The French champions have some of the best legs in the game, and Galtier is proving to the rest of the league they are not in the same class.
Mbappe, Neymar and Messi on target in Lille rout
After week three of the new season, PSG are already the runaway leaders. The capital city club is striking fear in the opposition as their strikers seem to compete for who scores the most goals. Galtier would be more than impressed with the performance his wards have been churning out this season.
On Sunday night, Kylian Mbappe scored the fastest goal this season. The opening goal of the 7-1 win over Lille came eight seconds into the game and is the fastest for 30 years. It set the tone for a long evening for the visitors, with PSG maintaining their 100% start to the new season.
PSG have not pulled their feet off the gas since the season commenced. Mbappe was set up by Lionel Messi, with the game barely starting for the Frenchman to equal the record by Michel Rio for Caen against Cannes in 1992.
Mbappe scored a hat-trick as PSG beat Lille 7-1. Neymar and Lionel Messi also got in on the act, with the Brazilian scoring a brace and Achraf Hakimi adding gloss to the scoreline.
PSG scored 17 goals in their opening three matches and conceded just three. The Paris club are two points above their closest rivals, Racing Lens and Olympique de Marseille.
Round-up of Sunday matches
While PSG were excising their authority over the league, others were trying to keep pace with the defending champions.
Auxerre and Stade Brest recorded their first wins of the season, as they got their first three points on the road, while Clermont and Stade Rennes also won their home games this weekend.
There were cards aplenty this weekend as the referees issued a total of 11 red cards. It is the first time it is happening in 30 years. The 2-1 away win for newly promoted Auxerre at Montpellier produced four red cards.
While Auxerre, Stade Brest, Stade Rennes and Clermont were winning their games, Toulouse had to rally from behind to pick a point against Lorient. Toulouse went behind as early as the second minute but fought back to secure a 2-2 draw with Lorient.
